Every now and then I check this on Google Groups to see if anything is happening, I think everyone from years ago went on to Facebook, etc. I am surprised to see such activity here, now. And, this is still going on... bashing ACIM and some feeling like it needs defending. I always liked the idea of the totally unmoderated NG, people are free to write whatever they want, and also free to not tie in with it, or see through the eyes of love (instead of attack in need of defense, etc) It's really good practice in remembering what we believe (the course teaches) and putting it into our lives.Can the Truth be harmed and does it need defense?
I'm not sure if some, or a lot of the posts are current, they don't seem to have dates on them, that I can see. One mentioned other NG that were discussing closing this group, but that was a long time ago. Unless it's come up again. Why doesn't every just live their own lives and let others live theirs?
There aren't very many places where people can vent, and express their honest feelings, and beliefs, and not be moderated, like blocked or thrown off a group. And, if others don't like it or agree... why give attention to it? Just send them love and blessings, and let them be.

Not sure if I can remember the names. One was John Lopez. Some used screen names, and some are on Facebook now. Mike Down Under (Mike Bysouth) Gene Ward Smith. Deborah in BC. I used to get it in a news reader, but don't have a ISP that offers this now, so looking on Google Groups. Early 2000's? Seems like time goes by so fast now. Maybe I can look through the archives and make a list.

I'm pretty much on the same page as you are.

The Course does challenge many of the beliefs held by people, and some people tend to ignore certain of those teachings. Myself included. For example, the Course tells us that the belief in medicine is a belief in magic. As long as I am in this world, keeping the body in good working condition is a priority for me, even if in the end the body has to be let go. To me, there is only the present. In the present, I use a body to interact with the physical world, and I (my ego for sure) want my body to be healthy, and for my ego to be happy.

As for magic, I am disappointed that the Course uses the term in a pejorative sense. Magic is a very useful metaphor for me. As Jo Rowling states through her character, Dumbledore, words are our most inexhaustible source of magic, capable of both inflicting injury and remedying it. The Course is all words, and its purpose is to heal the dream, and it does so by employing magic, at least according to Jo Rowling's understanding of magic. The Course is a treasure trove of magic.

It appears to me that if the Course is ever to have a key role in social discourse, it will have to be taken metaphorically by most people, and not literally. That weakens the effectiveness of the message, though.

I do understand why in the Course medicine and magic are treated dismissively; it is with regard to the final step of the atonement. However, it should go without saying that the perceived time difference between starting the Course and mastering the Course is the main obstacle to mastering the Course. The final step of the atonement comes at the death of the body, as the mind totally awakens and lets go of the physical realm. Anybody practicing the Course is not going to be instantly ready for the atonement, and will need medicine and magic to get them comfortably to the atonement.

How has your experience with the Course unfolded over these years?

For me, after three solid years of ACIM study groups from 1981 to 1984, I pretty much had the material memorized and did not read it again.

Although I went on to live in a Tibetan Buddhist community for a couple years, studied with numerous other religious practitioners of different faiths, and studied physics for several years, the message of the Course continues to guide my decisions.

I have also realized that the message of the Course is more truthful than most people realize. The idea that there is no time is a physical fact. By this, I mean that there is no physical past or physical future that one could travel to. If somehow, matter leaked out of the present, there is no physical world the matter could land in and continue to exist. The only time that exists, both in the physical world and the non-material world, is the present.

Change occurs in the present within the physical world, and yes, we can imagine linear time, but there is no physical reality in the past and no physical reality in the future. All that physically exists, exists only right here and right now.

The holy instant is a practice of fully being aware of this fact, that the only time there is, is now. When we completely let go of all the interpretations, memories, and hopes we place on physical reality, then for that moment, it becomes laughingly obvious that this world is just a dream. I cherish my practices of entering the holy instant several times throughout the day.

However, I still enjoy participating in the dream. I no longer have any fear of what happens in the dream. I find the challenges of physical life to be entertaining, and not unlike playing a harmless game of cards with someone whose company I enjoy.

In the process of being in this world, I can easily peel away the layers of guilt and fear as each situation arises. This is particularly easy to do once I realized that more than 99% of all human suffering is caused by words. It is the importance of words and the meanings we choose to give to them, both the words we speak and the words we hear, that causes nearly all of our grief.

Another reason I enjoy participating in the dream is because of the body. During my 40s, my health began to deteriorate to the point where my body was close to dying. Then I started to explore my body, and the knowledge about it that is available on the Internet, and found ways to heal and rejuvenate the body. Now, as my body approaches 60, my body is again quite healthy. It will still die when I am done with it, but it is interesting to understand the science behind it, and the practices necessary to keep it functioning such that living in it is enjoyable.

Regardless of the fact that this world is an illusion, it remains an illusion based on rules. Learning the rules (science) and learning to live a very healthy and happy life (morality) is, itself, a path to awakening. Minds are born into this world every moment, and minds leave this world every moment; there is no harm in passing along knowledge that can help others who will continue to pass this way. That is, after all, what the Course is; a message about how to awaken, and that was sent to this physical world.

Another reason I enjoy participating in the dream is because of the body. During my 40s, my health began to deteriorate to the point where my body was close to dying. Then I started to explore my body, and the knowledge about it that is available on the Internet, and found ways to heal and rejuvenate the body. Now, as my body approaches 60, my body is again quite healthy. It will still die when I am done with it, but it is interesting to understand the science behind it, and the practices necessary to keep it functioning such that living in it is enjoyable.
