Discussion:
Using a mechanical timer for the lessons?

I've been seeing these advertised, to use for the daily lessons in the
workbook. You set the timer for whatever the time is (to remember the
lessons) for that day and it goes off to remind you.
Isn't this defeating the purpose of training the mind to remember?
I'm not sure if it actually says not to use mechanical means to remember,
or just implies one should get used to remembering them (on one's own).
With the mechanical timers (some saw a good way to make money with this)
it doesn't train the mind to remember at all. Just to remember every morning
to set up the timer for that days lesson.
Kind of a step in the wrong direction, I think.
But then some seem to think the words of the lessons (memorizing them and
remembering them at specific times of the day) is what matters. Like going
to school, and memorizing facts, to be tested on and get grades. If one uses
a timer, and "says" the lessons all day at the right time, and does this
perfectly for a year, will they get a certificate of some kind (from God?)
saying they have accomplished the goal of the course? (don't let your
batteries die in the timer or you'll have to do it again next year! (LOL)
To me, the whole point (or the main one) of the course is to learn it,
remember it and put it into use in one's life.
What's the point of having beliefs if one doesn't at least attempt to
live them?

The Teachings get watered down by people who want to make money
off them and thus have to make them more palatable...

You could call their products: ACIM Lite.

changing the subject, do you remember the movie (animated to music)
"Heavy Metal"?
In one of the segments a secretary gets sucked up into a spaceship
and ends up in bed with a robot. She says after "I feel so guilty".
He says "earth women who find sexual satisfaction by mechanical
means always feel guilty"
( that's how I remember it anyway)
Seeing my subject line on this reminded me of that line LOL
Couldn't fine any scenes from it, but lots of music on YouTube

Yes!!!!! this is so true.
And, there are now many spinoffs of the course, too. Groups, some with
their own "guru" who set themselves up to tell others what the course
"really says". The one I like is "what Jesus REALLY meant when he said..."
There is even one group led by "Jesus" (saying he is author of ACIM) He
explains to people (who believe it) wha the course really means and says
(to me, it's from an ego slanted point of view) and posts on their group
asking that more and more money be sent to support them.
Doesn't seem like Jesus to me, but who knows WHAT Jesus is or would be
like in these modern times.
Seems like he would have been the one to invent the internet or start
Facebook, and would certainly (at some point) be Tme Magazine's Person of
the Year!
There seems to be a "course" for everyone (I think it says this,
individualized curriculum and listen to one's own Guidance, and maybe see
what one WANTS projected out into the world (i.e. "Jesus") And, of course,
some do seem to feel nothing is worth anything unless they have to sacrifice
and donate and pay for it.
Even though the version of the course *I* have read says to listen to
one's Inner Teacher. And "do not sacrifice".
It also (to me) says, in different words;... to each his own and
whatever anyone else wants to believe and do (even about the course and
Jesus) is up to them.

The peace of God is pretty easy. Just believe this with all your
heart:

All existence is Blessed and any apparent Evil is only ignorance.
You make your own reality with the nature of your beliefs.

Otherwise the world is Evil and you are a victim and your
life is hell.

listen to one's Inner Teacher.
A real magician teaches others how to become aware of and
use their own magickal abilities.
A Priest teaches others to be dependent on them.
And "do not sacrifice". It also (to me) says, in different
words;... to each his own and whatever anyone else wants to
believe and do (even about the course and Jesus) is up to them.
"The Peace of God is my one Goal". Don't get caught up in uhat
seems to be going on, but remember what really matters in an
overall way. Or maybe what DOESN'T matter.

The peace of God is pretty easy. Just believe this with all your
All existence is Blessed and any apparent Evil is only ignorance.
You make your own reality with the nature of your beliefs.
Otherwise the world is Evil and you are a victim and your
life is hell.
Well said.
Actually, I think this is what ACIM says, but not many seem to see it.
Or, they try and explain it and don't know how.

I've been seeing these advertised, to use for the daily
lessons in the workbook. You set the timer for whatever
the time is (to remember the lessons) for that day and it
goes off to remind you. Isn't this defeating the purpose of
training the mind to remember? I'm not sure if it actually
says not to use mechanical means to remember, or just
implies one should get used to remembering them (on one's
own). With the mechanical timers (some saw a good way
to make money with this) it doesn't train the mind to
remember at all. Just to remember every morning to set
up the timer for that days lesson. Kind of a step in the
wrong direction, I think. But then some seem to think the
words of the lessons (memorizing them and remembering them
at specific times of the day) is what matters. Like going
to school, and memorizing facts, to be tested on and get
grades. If one uses a timer, and "says" the lessons all day
at the right time, and does this perfectly for a year, will
they get a certificate of some kind (from God?) saying they
have accomplished the goal of the course? (don't let your
batteries die in the timer or you'll have to do it again
next year! (LOL) To me, the whole point (or the main one)
of the course is to learn it, remember it and put it into
use in one's life. What's the point of having beliefs if
one doesn't at least attempt to live them?
The Teachings get watered down by people who want to make
money off them and thus have to make them more palatable...
You could call their products: ACIM Lite.
Yes!!!!! this is so true. And, there are now many
spinoffs of the course, too. Groups, some with their own
"guru" who set themselves up to tell others what the course
"really says". The one I like is "what Jesus REALLY meant
when he said..." There is even one group led by "Jesus"
(saying he is author of ACIM) He explains to people (who
believe it) wha the course really means and says (to me, it's
from an ego slanted point of view) and posts on their group
asking that more and more money be sent to support them.
Doesn't seem like Jesus to me,
but who knows WHAT Jesus is or would be like in these modern
times.
When he returns he will be called the Anti-Christ by most
Christians. Because their religion has almost nothing to do
with the actual message of Jesus.
Seems like he would have been the one to invent the internet
or start Facebook, and would certainly (at some point) be Tme
Magazine's Person of the Year!
I think he's back already. He could be that fellow called the
Maitreya. Many Xians are calling him the Antichrist now.
There seems to be a "course" for everyone (I think it says
this, individualized curriculum and listen to one's own
Guidance, and maybe see what one WANTS projected out into the
world (i.e. "Jesus") And, of course, some do seem to feel
nothing is worth anything unless they have to sacrifice and
donate and pay for it.

Of course.

As the Course says, defenses do what they would defend against; this
being a perfect example.

Not at all. A bullet-proof vest does not fire bullets.
It doesn't inflict harm of any kind.

The way the course sees it, putting on a bullet proof vest would attract
the bullets. Putting it in a very simple and graphic way.

Theoretically there is some Truth in that. You are creating
the reality with the expectation. You get what you prepare for.

But we live in a _collective_ reality where the majority
can hold a war even if the minority is determined to have
peace.

So you have to be practical. You wear your seat belt. You wear a
helmet on a bicycle or motorcyle. If there's someone gunning for
you, you wear a bullet-proof vest.

This is an infinitely superior choice to getting a gun
to defend yourself.

Seems like it's the ego way of doing it.
I don't think the point is to "do the lessons" at a certain time, perfectly,
but to be "aware".
I once felt Guided to not "do" the lessons day after day another year. I
mean, it had been 12 or so years. The workbook says "the year we gve to God"
and "no more specific lessons" (or something like that) Someone I know, who
is into ACIM got absolutely furious at me about this. She kept teling me "do
you know the lessons perfectly, have you don't them every day, at the
appointed time, for a whole year?" She even sent me the Perry (COA) books,
his interpretation of the lessons (I think the ones in the original course
are fine and clear the way they are). She kept pushing me about this. I said
"how will YOU know if you have done them for a year perfectly, will Holy
Spirit give you a dipolma or certificate?" At one point I remembered the
course does say if a brother strongly insists something to do it. I finally
told her she was right, and she dropped it. Though I was and still am Guided
not to do the daily lessons. Usually at the end of the year I do feel like
getting back to them again. This year, I came across the CIMS Facebook site
where they have Maz (with his music) reading the daily lessons, and I've
been playing them. In a way this, too is using something outside to remember
them with. Any audio tape of them one plays. Not the same as reading them,
and remembering to at the speciic times. To me, overall, it's the idea of
Peace of God and not making a big deal about them, and how and when and
doing them "perfectly". Just remembering, maybe at this point as Guided. And
experiencing them and living them.
Every once in awhile this happens for me. And I still don't have any
diploma or certificate LOL
